Memorial Weekender

On the weekend of the 2nd to 4th June, we’ll hold a memorial weekend in Mid-Wales as a celebration of Mike’s life, by riding, camping and spending time with friends in the beautiful landscape he called home.

Programme

On Friday 2nd June, the villagers of Abbeycwmhir, where Mike used to live, have kindly allowed us to wild camp in the grounds of the Abbey. The local pub will provide a simple meal and the village community centre will be open to use toilets etc. The camping at Ty Mawr farm at Ysbyty Cynfyn will also be open for those wishing to head directly to set up camp at the farm. You will be able to cook for yourselves over a campfire or there are local pubs in the area for your evening meal.

In Abbeycwmhir, at around 10:00, after a breakfast provided at the community centre, a 20-mile ride will set off from Abbeycwmhir along the beautiful lanes to Rhayader and over the Elan Valley to Cwmystwyth – and finally to Ty Mawr farm in Ysbyty Cynfyn (the site of our most recent Valley Cat camps). The ride is purposefully short to enable most people to join in but it's challenging and beautiful enough to divert everyone too. This was one of Mike's favourite areas to ride and we'd like to share it with you. If you camped at Ty Mawr you may prefer to head out to meet the ride coming to the farm and return with us back to the farm. The route is shown below, with some small amounts off-road. There's an alternative on-road route direct via Devil's Bridge.

In Mike’s memory, we’ll ride self-sufficiently, as a self-supported group ride. There may experienced riders able to lend a hand to less experienced riders, however, you should plan to be self-sufficient, particularly as there is not a lunch provided on Saturday – though there are places to eat in Rhayader and at the Elan Valley Visitor Centre. In addition, in order to camp at both Abbeycwmhir and Ty Mawr, you’ll need to be bivvying, especially if you’ve cycled from home. Again, there may be cars travelling between the two locations, however, you should arrange this yourself and not count on it.

On Saturday afternoon and evening, at Ty Mawr farm, Mike's friends will provide beer, music, food and a chance to swap stories over the campfire. There are some hotels locally but the camping at the farm is spacious and there are composting toilets and showers.

Meals

We will provide dinner at Ty Mawr at 19:00 on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday morning at around 9:00; however, please ensure that you register with EventBrite this week so that we know numbers.

Registration

The weekender is free of charge, however, so that we know how many people to expect for meals, it’s important for you to register for the weekend. Please register for the event using EventBrite.

We look forward to seeing you all there.

Best wishes from Anna and co.
